Why doesn't your cat sleep at night?

The cat sprinting down the hallway at three in the morning, the paw on your face at five, is not badly behaved. It is living on its species' clock, and that clock is not yours.

Not nocturnal, crepuscular

Cats are not nocturnal (night) animals but crepuscular (twilight) ones. Their most active hours are dawn and dusk, when their prey moves too. The domestic cat keeps this rhythm. Your bedtime is the start of its hunting hour.

If nobody is home during the day, the cat sleeps all day, has full energy when you return, and looks for somewhere to spend it at midnight. The problem is not the cat; it is the calendar.

What you can change

1. Tire it out during the day. The most effective method is a real 15–20 minute play session before bed. The play should mimic the hunting sequence: chase, catch, and a small treat at the end. Play that ends without the reward doesn't settle a cat.

2. Feed after play. In the wild a cat hunts, eats, grooms, sleeps. Moving the main meal to the end of the evening session completes that cycle. Setting an automatic feeder for 5 a.m. also breaks the link between "5 a.m." and "wake the human": the food comes from the machine, not from you.

3. Put stimulation into the day. A spot at the window, a tower to climb, puzzle feeders. A cat that is mentally tired during the day sleeps longer at night.

4. Don't respond. The hardest rule. Getting up to feed or attend to a cat that meows at night reinforces the behaviour; the cat learns it once and never forgets. The first week is hard, then it settles. Responding sometimes is worse than never responding; the cat learns to gamble.

5. Close the bedroom door, but compensate. If the door closes, the cat needs its own sleeping place, water and a scratcher outside it. Scratching at the door is a sign of exclusion stress.

When to see the vet

Some night restlessness is medical, not behavioural. A vet check is essential when:

In these cases no play session will help, and delay harms the cat.

A realistic expectation

A cat will never become an animal that sleeps on your schedule. The aim is to shift its active hours to early evening and to spend the night's energy during the day. In homes that do both, night waking largely stops; the few mornings that remain are the price of being loved by a cat.

Height, a lookout and a scratching surface are the three basic parts of daytime stimulation; every piece in the collection was drawn to meet at least one of them.
